Universities, Athletic Teams and Team Culture

A sports team’s culture is the shared foundation of values, beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors that define how a team operates, interacts, and approaches competition.

It acts as a "personality" for the team, creating a unique identity and guiding team members' actions on and off the field.

One of the most important jobs as a coach is to develop and foster a team culture.

This culture, or identity, is really the foundation of all effective teams.

As a coach, general manager, or athletic director, this culture is your vision or philosophy put into action. As you think back to teams on which you have coached or played, the team culture probably was a main ingredient in your success or failure.
Understanding how a student athlete’s background is valued by business can provide benefits in both their immediate athletic pursuits and the attainment of their longer-term career objectives. A discussion on how the two scenarios are strongly related reinforces the importance of culture to both the immediate task of winning on the field of play and the longer-term objective of success in business.

TSG Discovery Sessions

Here Is Where We Begin Working With Sports Teams

Interactive TSG workshop provides the coaching staff with an ideal opportunity to discover what the players actually know about the key components of the sports culture they are participating in. Its critical the coaching staff understand what the team members know about their own culture, and more importantly what they don’t know. It is valuable to have this open discussion to enhance current athletic performance, and to link it to the longer-term benefits of the team’s culture to individual success in business.
